Packaging Tips
Packing Your Belongings
Packing your materials correctly is a main concern when moving belongings. Always maintain a sturdy packing carton while keeping inner items protected correctly. Follow some of these basic packing tips for an easier packing experience:
- When packing electronics, i.e. Computers, always try to use the original box and packing materials. If these are not available, use boxes that fit closely to the size of its potential contents.
- Use bubble wrap, towels, blankets, newspaper, or clothes to pack fragile items such as picture frames, mugs, alarm clocks, electronics, etc.
- Make sure that there is no movement inside the boxes. If there is any room left make sure to fill in the gap.
- Always make sure to tape your boxes shut, folded boxes are not sturdy enough to support other boxes without crushing.
Distribute the Weight
Never put all of you books in the same box. Not only does this put stress on the box but it is also hard on anyone moving the box. Separate into multiple boxes if possible.
- Don’t put all of your books in the same box.
- Mix books with items like movies and linens. This is also a good way to keep your books in good condition.
- Do not centralize the weight to one spot. Distribute the weight across the base or throughout the box in layers.
Seal Your Items
Boxes:
Securing boxes is quite simple.
- Using quality packing tape of 2”-3” place at least three strips across the top and bottom seal.
- Place one piece across the meeting point of the two flaps and one on each side to hold it down.
Carpets & Rugs:
- Roll carpets and rugs up tightly and tape tightly in at least three points (top, middle, and bottom).
- Be sure to tape all drawers closed, and cover the finished surfaces with plastic or cardboard to prevent minor scratches during handling. Store any loose hardware in one of your boxes.
Shelves:
- Separate the shelves from the frame, and tape them together tightly. Store any loose hardware in one of your boxes.
Futons:
- Remove cushion and cover with plastic.
- Always label both the frame and cushion.
Refrigerators:
- Refrigerators must be unplugged for AT LEAST 2 DAYS, if not unplugged then there will be leakage issues.
- They do not need to be packed into anything unless you have the original box.
Trunks and Luggage:
- Make sure that these items are tightly packed and locked.
- Taping the items may work but could also damage the finish of the material.
